- Historical Printing Press Origins: Until the early 18th century, the Oxford University Press (OUP) operated its printing presses in the basement of the Sheldonian Theatre. This unique location meant that compositors had to pause their work whenever the Theatre was used for ceremonies.
- Architectural Marvel: The University commissioned Nicholas Hawksmoor to design a new building for the OUP, resulting in a stunning neoclassical structure. Construction began in 1711 and was completed in 1715 by builder and sculptor William Townesend of Oxford.
- Clarendon Legacy: The Clarendon Building was funded largely from the proceeds of the commercially successful “History of the Great Rebellion” by the 1st Earl of Clarendon. His legacy also funded the construction of the Clarendon Laboratory in Oxford.
- Evolution of Usage: After the OUP moved to Walton Street in the 1820s, the Clarendon Building was repurposed for administrative use by the University. Since 1975, it has been part of the Bodleian Library, providing office and meeting space for senior staff members.
- Student Activism: On January 22, 2009, student demonstrators occupied part of the Clarendon Building for seven hours, calling for the University to condemn Israel’s role in the 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza conflict and to cancel a lecture series at Balliol College inaugurated by Shimon Peres. The protest ended after an agreement with the Senior Proctor, highlighting the University’s vibrant history of student activism.

We support our scholars by reducing the financial barriers to graduate study, enabling our scholars to focus on their studies.
Furthermore, by offering living expenses, it provides our scholars with the opportunity to live an active life within Oxford and, most importantly, the time to relax and socialize away from their studies.

To be considered for the Scholarship, you must meet the following:
- Clarendon Scholarships are awarded on the basis of outstanding academic merit and potential to graduate students from all around the world.
- Scholarships are tenable in all subject areas and are open to candidates who apply for a new master’s or DPhil course by the January admissions deadline.
- All degree-bearing courses at graduate level in any subject are eligible. This encompasses all full-time and part-time master’s and all DPhil courses. A list of all the graduate courses offered by the University of Oxford can be found on the Courses page.
- Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma courses are not eligible for this scholarship.
Rewards For Oxford University Clarendon Scholarships 2025
- All Clarendon Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full.
- Scholars on a full-time course receive a generous annual grant for living costs – which will be at least £17,668 for 2024-25. Scholars on a part-time course will receive a study support grant, to assist with non-fee costs. Scholars on a part-time course will receive a study support grant, to assist with non-fee costs.
- The scholarships are normally offered for the full period for which you are liable to pay tuition fees to the University, which is usually the same as the length of your course.

If you apply for a full- or part-time master’s or DPhil course at Oxford by the December or January deadline for your course, you will automatically be considered for a Clarendon Scholarship. You do not need to submit any additional documents specifically for the Clarendon Scholarships – there is no separate scholarship application form. You do, however, need to apply before the December or January deadline (5 or 19 January 2025) for your course if you wish to be considered for the scholarship.
