Facts About the University of New Brunswick

  1. Historic Foundations: Founded in 1785, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) originated as the Academy of Liberal Arts and Sciences, following a petition by Loyalist settlers. This makes it one of the oldest universities in North America, with a rich history that began just two years after the American Revolution.
  2. Royal Charter: In 1827, UNB was granted a royal charter by King George IV, transforming it into King’s College. This royal endorsement elevated its status and aligned it with prestigious institutions of the time.
  3. Trailblazing Women: Mary Kingsley Tibbits broke barriers in 1866 as the first regularly admitted female student, pioneering the way for women in higher education at a time when such opportunities were rare.
  4. Forestry Pioneers: By the late 1800s, UNB was one of only two Canadian universities offering a degree in Forestry Engineering. Its graduates played a crucial role in the development of Canada’s Dominion Forests, becoming some of the first Forest Rangers.
  5. Influential Visits: The university has hosted notable figures like United States Senator John F. Kennedy, who received an honorary degree in 1957, and his brother, Robert F. Kennedy, who visited in 1967 to deliver the main address and receive the same honor.
  6. Evolving Governance: In 1906, UNB established a modern bicameral system of governance, consisting of a senate for academic policy and a board of governors for financial policy, a progressive move that shaped the university’s administration.
  7. Expansion and Innovation: The establishment of a second campus in Saint John in 1964 marked a significant expansion, starting with just 96 students and growing into a bustling academic hub.
  8. Pioneering Unionization: The Association of University of New Brunswick Teachers (AUNBT), formed in 1954, became the bargaining agent for full-time academic staff in 1979 and achieved certification for contract academic staff in 2008, advocating for faculty rights and benefits.
  9. Legal Education Transformation: In 1959, the Faculty of Law was moved from Saint John to Fredericton, a significant shift influenced by a report from McGill University, marking a new era for legal education at UNB.
  10. Vibrant Student Body: With more than 35,000 students across its five-campus system, UNB boasts a diverse and inclusive culture, attracting students from over 100 countries, fostering a global community of learners.
  11. Commitment to Excellence: Guided by the Cowboy Code and a mission to make education accessible, UNB continues to transform tomorrow, offering personalized academic support with a student-to-faculty ratio of 20:1.
