The Anambra State Polytechnic, Mgbakwu, was established by upgrading the former Anambra State College of Agriculture, Mgbakwu, to a polytechnic status in January 2017. This upgrade was initiated by the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, with the aim of expanding efforts to build new manpower capacity to meet the evolving demands of the time.
Previously, the institution had existed as a fully accredited College of Agriculture by the National Board for Technical Education in Nigeria (NBTE) since 2007. It was established by the Anambra State of Nigeria Law No. 2007 ANHA/LAW/2008/07, which took effect on June 14, 2007.
The bill for the upgrade of the institution was passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly and assented to by the Governor, leading to the establishment of the Anambra State Polytechnic Law in 2017.
