Financial Benefits:
Tuition and living expenses are covered by the Toshizo Watanabe International Scholarship, and the award amount is decided by the recipient’s financial circumstances. It offers monthly living expense assistance as well as tuition up to 1,700,000 yen annually.
- Up to 70,000 yen per month for 1-2 years of undergraduate study
- Up to 60,000 yen per month for the 3rd year of undergraduate study
- Up to 50,000 yen per month for the 4th year of undergraduate and graduate studies
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must fulfill the following requirements in order to be considered for the Toshizo Watanabe International Scholarship:
- Refugee Background: Candidates must be residents of Japan, have international protection from the UNHCR or a foreign government, or be unable to return home because of political upheaval or conflict.
- Education Requirements: Candidates must have been admitted into a Japanese university or graduate program and have completed 12 years of formal education, or its equivalent.
- Language Proficiency: Candidates whose academic language is Japanese must show that they are proficient in it by taking the EJU or JLPT tests. English language learners are required to demonstrate both basic Japanese (JLPT N5-N4 level) and English competency.
- Financial Need: Candidates must show that they are having financial challenges in order to continue their study.
- Not Eligible for Government Support: This scholarship is not available to those who are currently receiving government aid through the New Student Support Program for Higher Education.
