Universities being chosen as a second choice by candidates during UTME registration is what most schools would not accept. The idea of being chosen as a back up plan or accepting left overs has been the myopic mentality these schools have always had therefore rejecting the Second choice status by candidates eventhough this practice has been condemned severally by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Baord (JAMB).
However, this not to say it is a general practice by all private, federal and state universities in Nigeria, as we shall see in the cause of reading this post, Federal Universities that accept being selected as 2nd choice for UTME and Direct Entry candidates, State Universities that accept second choice candidates and also, private universities accepting 2nd choice candidates.
In the past, JAMB made provisions for 1st and 2nd choice for selecting preferred institutions. Candidates were made to select Federal universities as first choice while the state counterparts occupied second choice positions but that is no longer the case.
Today there are options for selecting three (3) institutions, first choice, second choice and third choice. Ideally, candidates are to select a federal university as first choice, state university as second choice and a polytechnic or college of education as third choice. Though Vice Chancellors of various state universities condemned this move claiming that the best brains and well behaved candidates go for Federal universities while the left students who most probably are not as smart as the later use them (state universities) as back up plans.
To avert the consequences of making either a state or Federal university a second choice, candidates have resorted to making their preferred choice of institution both first and second choice. Say for example a student that wants to register Delta state university as second choice and UNICAL as first choice would be forced to either make DELSU both first and second choice or make UNICAL both first and second choice since neither of them would accept being registered as second choice
In this post, we will be furnishing you with the following:
a) List of Federal Universities that accept being chosen as second choice of institution during UTME registration
b) State Universities that accept being chosen as second choice of institution during UTME registration and also accept second choice candidates from other institutions.
c) Private universities that accept both second and third choice DE and UTME candidates
This would help candidates with proper selection during their JAMB registration procedure so it would be wise to have that in mind when registering.
The cut off mark for these schools are in no way made lower than that of first choice universities, please take note. Admission requirements and procedures remain the same and must be strictly adhered to by prospective students.
Still on the topic of universities that accept being selected as 2nd choice, all private universities and polytechnics ideally, accept second choice candidates so if your intention is to register a Polytechnic or private university, you can choose any Federal or state university as your first choice and conveniently select a private university or polytechnic as your second choice.
Most Federal and state universities in the North accept second choice candidates because of the distance and not too many candidates selecting them as their preferred choice of institution so they are contented with being chosen as second choice.
Now lets go through the list of Universities that accept second choice candidates and being selected as second choice of institutions during UTME registration exercise.

Without proper information most candidates get misled by hearsay and this has made some lose out on their admission. The above schools also accept transfer students from other universities or polytechnics so long as you meet their requirements.
So with this information at your disposal, it would be worthwhile to inform other candidates that there are Federal schools that still accept being registered as second choice unlike in the past where they just assumed only state schools accept being used as second choice.
Hope this information was helpful? please inform other candidates about this recent development and your inputs as regards the list of schools that accept second choice would be highly appreciated to keep this list updated.
